The Hummer H2 is a large four-wheel-drive SUV sold for the 2003 to 2009 model years, along with the H2 SUT pickup version. The first three model years drew most of its owner complaints, about wipers, gauges, brakes and steering. Complaints fall sharply for the later years.

This guide ranks each H2 model year using NHTSA complaints and recalls and our years to avoid methodology. In short: avoid the 2003 to 2005, be careful with the 2006, and look for a 2008 or 2009 if you want an H2.

Most common Hummer H2 problems

These are the problems that show up most in NHTSA complaints and recall campaigns.

1. Windshield wiper failures

Visibility is the most-reported component, with 98 complaints, 56 of them for the 2003. Most describe the windshield wipers running on their own, stopping or working only some of the time. Two recalls cover the 2003. Campaign 02V283 covers certain 2003 H2s with a wiper motor that may fail, and campaign 08V456 covers 2003 H2s where water can get into the wiper motor module and make the wipers stop working.

2. Speedometer, gauges and electrical faults

The electrical system is the second most-reported component, with 80 complaints. Many 2005 complaints describe the speedometer and other gauges sticking, dropping to zero or jumping around while driving. There is no H2 recall for the gauges in NHTSA data.

Two recalls cover a fire risk from the heated windshield washer system. Campaign 08V441 covers certain 2006 to 2008 H2s, and campaign 10V240 covers certain 2006 to 2009 H2s, where the heated washer module may overheat, cause smoke or start a fire.

3. Brake line rust and brake failures

Service brakes are the third most-reported component, with 50 complaints. Many 2003 and 2004 complaints describe the brake pedal going to the floor, often after the brake lines rusted through. Two recalls cover the hydraulic brake booster. Campaign 04V045 covers certain 2003 and 2004 H2s with a booster relief valve seal that may fracture, and campaign 05V043 covers certain 2004 and 2005 trucks where the booster’s pressure accumulator may crack and leak.

4. Steering parts that break

Steering has 35 complaints, 17 of them for the 2003. Several describe tie rods or steering knuckles breaking at low speed, and some report the front wheel collapsing or coming off. Campaign 05V455 covers certain 2006 H2s with a power steering hose that may leak, causing a loss of power steering and, with hydraulic brake assist, a loss of brake assist.

5. Airbag warning lights and water leaks (2005)

The 2005 has 12 airbag complaints, most describing an airbag warning light that stays on. Several owners link it to water leaking into the cabin and damaging the airbag control module. There is no H2 recall for this in NHTSA data.

Which Hummer H2 years to avoid

Avoid: 2003, 2004 and 2005

The 2003 has 146 complaints and 5 recalls, the most of any year, led by wiper, electrical, brake and steering complaints. The 2004 has 59 complaints and the 2005 has 91, led by electrical problems, including stuck gauges and airbag warning lights on the 2005.

Caution: 2006

The 2006 has far fewer complaints, 25, but 5 recalls, including the power steering hose and both heated washer fire recalls. Confirm all recall work before you buy one.

What is the best Hummer H2 year

The 2009 is the best H2 year in NHTSA data, with 2 complaints and one recall, the heated washer campaign. The 2007 and 2008 are also good choices, with 11 and 7 complaints. Any H2 is now well over 15 years old, so condition and rust matter more than the model year.

Hummer H2 pre-purchase checklist

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm every open recall is complete.
  • Inspect the brake lines, frame and underbody for rust.
  • Check the tie rods, steering knuckles and front suspension for wear or damage.
  • Test the wipers on every setting, and watch the speedometer and gauges on a test drive.
  • Check that the airbag warning light goes off after start-up, and look for water stains on the front floor.
  • Have a mechanic inspect the truck before you buy.

Better alternatives to consider

If you want a large, capable SUV, these models are worth comparing. Check the years to avoid for each one before you shop.

Is the Hummer H2 reliable

The early H2 has a poor NHTSA record, with hundreds of complaints about wipers, gauges, brakes and steering. The later years have far fewer complaints. Because every H2 is now an older truck, a careful inspection for rust and worn steering parts matters most.
