If you own a classy old-school Cadillac like the DeVille coupe, you may have a famous 8.2-liter engine under the hood. It’s one of the most iconic powertrains and is still considered one of the final original big block V8s up to date. Still, the engine now reached quite an age in most of the cars powered by it.

That calls for a very specific DIY maintenance routine, and it all starts with the Cadillac 8.2L (499 cu in) firing order. It can help you deal with common issues of the engine such as cylinder misfires, oil leaks, and spark plug replacements, so let’s get into it.

Cadillac 8.2L firing order

The problem that most drivers face sooner or later with this engine is the confusing firing order that differs for various Cadillac V8s. However, this time you’d be lucky since the 8.2-liter engine shares the same V8 and its firing order as the other big block V8s.

So, the Cadillac 8.2L firing order is 1-5-6-3-4-2-7-8 and the thing is – the sequence makes you jump from one cylinder bank to another. That’s why it’s so important to also know the cylinder positions within this engine which you can later use to properly inspect the cylinders by following the firing order.

That being said, we’ve got to set you in the right direction by explaining a bit more about the cylinder order in this engine.

If the firing order is the instructions manual, identifying the cylinders is doing hard work in practice. You need to identify the first cylinder right off the bat since it helps find all the other ones. It’s a good thing that the first cylinder is right at the front end of the engine right above the crank pulley.

Other cylinders in this bank are cylinders number three, five, and seven. On the other hand, the opposite cylinder bank houses cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Once you identify all the cylinders, the only thing left to do is apply the firing order to check the cylinders in the sequence.

Cadillac 8.2L vehicle applications

Now we are left with the final piece of the puzzle and that’s to give you a complete list of all the vehicles using this engine. This way you won’t be in a risky situation of misplacing it with another firing order:

  • Cadillac DeVille Coupe
  • Cadillac Eldorado
  • Cadillac Fleetwood

The engine was sooner or later used in most Cadillacs except for the Seville model, so if you own any of these produced in the 1980s, the same firing order applies.

Our take

Overall, we have to say that the Cadillac 8.2-liter engine is something we won’t likely see in the modern era of cars. That’s why it’s even more important to preserve the classic beauty it comes with, and you should be able to do just that after going through this guide!
