Out of all the tractors and working machines Ford made in collaboration with Ferguson back in the day, the 8N stands out as the most popular. To this day, it has remained one of the go-to options of farmers and everyday people needing a robust and reliable machine.

Well, things could go a bit south when reported issues with it happen and drivers ask themselves – what’s the Ford 8N tractor firing order? That’s what we are here to discuss, so join us on the road as we investigate the 8N’s engine, cylinders, and repairs.

Ford 8N 119.7 cu in firing order

The Ford 8N 119.7 cu in firing order is 1-2-4-3 and the engine itself is a two-liter four-cylinder that provides about 20 horsepower. For a working machine as light as the 8N, it’s more than enough, but problems occur when the spark plug connections get torn up or cut off.

In that case, owners had to figure out the firing order and the cylinder positions within the engine to properly replace the plugs or patch up the connections.

So, the first thing you’ll need is to get to know the firing sequence, while the other one is figuring out how the cylinders are placed within the engine.

The cylinder order of the 8N’s engine is rather simple – there’s a four-cylinder engine positioned in a straight line, and the cylinder up from is labeled as number 1. The cylinder then goes from 1 to 2, 3, and 4 looking from the front of the tractor towards the rear of the engine.

The cylinder number 4 would then be the one closest to your sitting position. You can use this along with the firing order to replace spark plug wires and properly connect them to the distributor.

All the cylinder spark plug wires are connected to the distributor in a counter-clockwise manner.

Ford 8N vehicle applications

The 2.0-liter flat-four engine is one used in Ford’s 8N tractor, while other tractor models of that time used different engines.

The most prominent one besides the 2.0-liter is the more recent 2.8-liter four-cylinder, while the 9N tractor uses the same engine.

Still, most of the prominent models of that time like 2N and 9N also used the 2.0-liter engine, only packed with a different transmission system.

Our take

Well, there you have it – now you know a bit more about your 8N tractor’s engine, firing sequence, and every other detail regarding the engine layout and its cylinders.

You can now properly use the information listed in this guide for necessary repairs, and we just have to warn you to use high-quality replacement spark plug wires for this tractor for a long-lasting solution.
